Job Description

We are currently hiring for our Children and Family Services department which includes programs like Early Head Start, Head Start, Home Based Services and Development Play Groups. We have locations throughout Oakland (most are easily accessible by BART) and a site located in Concord.
The Early Head Start and Head Start program at The Unity Council reaches over 900 families across Oakland and Concord every day. Our early child-development play-based curriculum is designed to meet each family where it’s at on the path to school readiness and meeting each child’s full potential. Responsibilities include:
• Provide responsive/attachment ready relationship based care and education with children including, joining in their play, and planning and leading active gross motor games
• Encourage open communication with families, invite families to actively participate in the classroom, and conduct two parent-teacher conferences and two home visits annually
• Maintain a healthy and safe environment using daily health checks, health and safety checklists, preventive health measures, and universal precautions regarding sanitation, hand washing, and diapering
Here are some of our qualifications:
Substitute Teacher
• High School Diploma or GED preferred
• Minimum of 6 units of Early Childhood Education from a regionally accredited institution or currently working towards the completion of 6 semester units in ECE and the willingness to continue education
• One year experience working with infants/toddlers
Teacher I
• Meet the requirements for an Associates Teacher Permit or have minimum of six units in Early Childhood Education and maintain enrollment to obtain an Associate’s permit within the first twelve months of hire.
• Teachers working with children in Early Head Start need six units in infant/toddler development.
• All teachers must have a college degree or participate in a professional development plan to obtain a degree
• Experience working with the age of the children served preschool children and/or infants and toddlers
Teacher II
• AA Degree preferred, or a minimum of 24 units in Early Childhood
Education from a regionally accredited institution and must be willing to
earn 3 units per semester towards AA degree & Children’s Center Permit
• Minimum 2-3 years teaching experience working in a preschool setting
• Ability to create and implement daily curriculum plans
General qualifications:
Prior experience in Early Head Start/Head Start programs preferred, but not required
Spanish Bilingual/Bi-literate preferred, but not required
Must pass background check, fingerprint clearance and health screening prior to employment
Flexible, good-humored, comfortable giving and receiving clear and honest feedback
Ability to lift 25 lbs
