Job Description
P-T Mandarin Speaking 1:1 Instruction Aide for Preschooler
We are seeking a bilingual (English/Mandarin) one-on-one instruction aide for a delightful 4-year-old preschooler who currently speaks only Mandarin and attends a Mandarin-immersion class in his Montessori school in Berkeley. His receptive Mandarin is excellent, but he has challenges with his play and communication with others, especially peers. He has a diagnosis of mild Autism and requires 1:1 support to facilitate his social interaction and classroom learning in the school he has been attending for two years now. The aide will attend class with the student, assist him in following along with classroom activities, and facilitate communication and interaction with his peers. This is a wonderful opportunity to receive training by developmental specialists working with the family (a developmental and clinical psychologist, a speech and language therapist, and occupational therapist, as well with a Montessori supervisor from the school) to work with young children with any learning differences. The aide will collaborate with parents, teachers, and specialists.
Start Date: ASAP
Pay: $16- $20 an hour (depending on education and experience)
Time: Part-time, Monday through Friday 2:00pm – 4:00pm (plus 1-2 hours training per week).
And/or: Additional hours 9:00 – 2:00, Monday – Friday will be available through November or beyond for the same or separate person.
Location: at a Montessori school in Berkeley
POSITION DETAILS:
Aide will be expected to perform:
Support and assist the student in classroom.
Supervise the student in designated areas and as assigned (e.g. hallways, bathrooms, playground, etc.).
Facilitate interactions, communication, and appropriate social behaviors, and support play interactions with peers.
Monitor the student’s performance, and record relevant data daily to assess progress.
Assist the student individually or in small groups in order to help him master and reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Bilingual fluency (English/Mandarin) is required (Mandarin fluency required only at the elementary-school level)
Undergraduate degrees or majors in a relevant field (e.g., Education, Special Education, Psychology, Speech and Language or Communication) are preferred
Experience working with young children is preferred
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Excellent attendance and reliability
