Job Description

We are seeking a Project Assistant with a strong desire to provide education and assistance to businesses and residential properties to help implement recycling, composting, waste reduction, resource conservation, and pollution prevention programs. This position will require skills such as verbal and written communication, quantitative analysis, and problem-solving. This position will support field work and waste characterization studies in Cascadia’s Recycling & Materials Management (RMM) and Education, Communication, and Outreach (ECO) lines of business. This position is full-time and will be based in Cascadia’s Bay Area office, located in Oakland, CA. Community outreach will compose approximately 70% of the role and will require the ability to communicate effectively with people from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds. Primary job responsibilities for this position include:
• Conducting work that has a significant, tangible impact in your local community by providing waste reduction and recycling assistance and education to businesses and residential properties around the Bay Area. In this role, there is no “typical day”: one day you’ll be helping the zoo, the next a mom-and-pop shop, and the next a multinational corporation—and they all rely on your expertise to support excellent recycling and composting programs.
• Effectively communicating with people from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds and conducting all job functions with equal proficiency in both English and Cantonese, including in-person outreach with residents and business representatives about recycling and composting, resource conservation, and pollution prevention.
• Evaluating and informing how programs are designed to ensure underserved communities have equitable access.
• Working in the field, onsite with customers, where you will provide in-person assistance to help businesses understand their waste streams by visually analyzing or hand-sorting samples of waste, recyclables, and/or organic materials.
• Independently scheduling and conducting meetings with businesses and residential property managers where you will help them save money and resources by persuading them to actively participate in increased recycling efforts.
• Performing interactive trainings to change people’s behaviors so that they recycle and compost correctly.
• Participating in community events where you’ll conduct outreach tabling to promote recycling programs.
• Conducting quantitative analyses, including development and use of spreadsheets and databases.
• Performing data entry using Microsoft Dynamics CRM software, Excel, Google Sheets, ArcGIS, and other online data software.
• Assisting with writing, production, and overall execution of proposals and reports as needed.
• Conducting research, including internet and telephone surveys, as needed.
• Utilizing Microsoft Word and PowerPoint to create and deliver professional and informative presentations and reports.
• Performing related support duties as required.
The other 30% of the job will involve working with corporate teams and local governments. This work may involve conducting telephone surveys and business outreach phone calls, performing office-based desktop research and data entry, hand-sorting waste samples (waste characterization studies), and providing assistance with writing memos and various other project-related documents.
Required Qualifications
This position requires a candidate with the following qualifications:
• If you love talking to people, this is the job for you! It requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both in person and over the phone. You are also culturally competent and emotionally intelligent and can connect respectfully with people from a variety of cultural backgrounds, including Cantonese-speaking communities in the Bay Area.
• The ability to work effectively with businesses and the public in diverse communities and in underserved areas.
• You have a desire to immerse yourself in the environmental sector, learn more about waste reduction and recycling, water and energy efficiency, stormwater and wastewater pollution prevention, transportation, and climate change. Prior experience in these areas is preferred but not required.
• You have spoken and written fluency in English and spoken fluency in Cantonese.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, including Outlook, Word, and Excel, with a willingness to expand skills.
• You have a strong level of comfort working with technology, including tablet computers.
• You have strong organizational skills with an emphasis on efficiency and accuracy in carrying out administrative tasks.
• The ability to do the following: multitask, prioritize, stay organized, and meet critical deadlines in a fast paced work environment.
• Willingness to work both in teams and independently to advance common goals, think creatively, use sound judgement to resolve issues, and create high-quality work products.
• Willingness and desire to take on new challenges and responsibilities.
• Valid driver’s license and comfort with driving (personal vehicle not required).
• The ability to stand or walk on uneven surfaces for up to 8 hours per day.
• The ability to lift or move up to 20 pounds.
Other highly desirable attributes include:
• Ability to work outdoors, including in inclement weather.
• Ability to type in Chinese using a computer (desired, not necessary).
• Bilingual or multilingual capabilities in languages commonly spoken in the Bay Area and/or experience working in a foreign country.
• Experience setting up sustainability or outreach programs at businesses and/or residential buildings.
• Knowledge of and interest in water and energy efficiency, hazardous waste management and pollution prevention, solid waste, composting, and/or recycling.
