About You:
You are a health-conscious chef, herbalist, or restauranteur with a business-oriented mind, a knack for numbers and a connection to herbal medicine, nutrition, and wellness. You believe in our mission and can envision the many ways you can contribute to it on a daily basis, including representing The Well as a primary leader of the cafe. Maintaining budgets, communications and outreach is something that comes almost naturally to you, which you’re excited to do on behalf of The Well. You are delighted to help take orders at the register, discuss menu items with customers, assemble food orders and maintain a clean, organized workspace and lobby. You have a strong track record of general cafe or restaurant management. You’re comfortable in a leadership role and are energized both by successes and challenges. You’re invested in successfully translating The Well’s vision into practical application, and can skillfully juggle the many different things that make this possible. You have the energy and creativity to play a key part in ensuring the thriving of this cafe.
Responsibilities:
Building culture, environment, sales and client loyalty:
Welcomes cafe guests with a positive and delightful attitude
Takes customer orders at the register
Expedites drink orders
Ensures service is exceptional, welcoming, and high integrity
Verifies food cooked is to standard in quality and quantity
Brings love and presence to food preparation
Cleans cooking utensils, workstations and other equipment used in food prep
Completes all opening and closing tasks with ease and consistency
Food Prep
Manage and carries out all food preparation
Produce weekly Kitchen Notes to update staff on any changes or developments
Cost evaluation of each menu item
Coordinate all food program administration (ex. inventory, ordering, etc.) in collaboration with Cafe Manager
Develop and refine recipes in conjunction with others
Uphold kitchen safety and health code requirements and coordinate with dish room employees
Quality control of plating
Tracking and prevention of loss
Contributes to building efficiency in food prep and production
Brings love and presence to herbal processes and food creation
Management
Assist Owner in staff hiring and training
Participate in the management circle of meetings and decision making
Oversees day-to-day operations of cafe
Assists in developing and managing special events
Assists in establishing and managing systems (financials, inventory, sourcing, procedures, training) and people (development, human potential, happiness).
Is visible and available to staff and guests
Contributes actively to conversations around gentrification, social justice, herbal medicine, healing, community building as they are relevant to cafe business and mission.
Education/Experience:
High school diploma, general education degree, or equivalent required.
Previous cafe/restaurant management experience required.
Key Qualities and Competencies:
Has knowledge, experience and interest in herbal medicine, healing foods, and wellness. Ability to engage guests on the subject
Awareness of, or willingness to learn about, systems of oppression, equality, and has a passion for social justice and creating safe, welcoming spaces for all people.
Good interpersonal skills, high integrity, clear communication skills, connection to plants, and a respect for people and plants
Good time management, planning and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks.
Positive attitude, friendly and upbeat personality.
Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations. Able to exercise sound judgment.
Able to read, write and communicate effectively. Computer skills are required.
Motivated and inspired to be a part of creating a new cafe and healing space
Ability to work well on a small team sharing roles and responsibilities
Additional Qualities and Skills:
Committed to one’s own personal development and healing
Bi-lingual. English and Spanish.
Teaching/facilitation skills
Terms of employment: Full time starting August 1st with training the week prior.
Direct Supervisor: Owner
Compensation: Competitive, salaried with benefits, based on experience
Hours: On shift behind register Thursday-Sunday from 8am-2pm (24 hours/week), food prep 6am-8am Tu, Th, Fri, Sa, Su (10 hours/week), management meetings & tasks flexible (6 hours/week)
