Job Description

Summer Internship Opportunity with Jackson Orthopedic Foundation

The Jackson Orthopedic Foundation (JOF) Summer Intern Program takes place July 9 – August 17, 2018. Application deadline is June 1.

The program is designed to provide college students with an immersion experience in healthcare, providing them with plentiful opportunities to explore various health fields while shadowing experienced providers as they treat patients. Whether you are interested in becoming a nurse, physician, physician assistant, or a physical or occupational therapist, this internship provides insight into the unique aspects of a variety of professional roles in healthcare while emphasizing inter-specialty collaboration.

Throughout the program, we emphasize musculoskeletal health, focusing on conditions affecting the bones, muscles, and joints. Students learn basic anatomy of the musculoskeletal system and present case studies based on their shadowing experiences during weekly conferences with each other in guided, group learning sessions. We encourage teamwork and professional collaboration among interns.

The program requires that prospective interns be available two days per week (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) throughout the duration of the program. One of these days will be our weekly conference day (Monday) and the other will be the preceptor-shadowing day (alternating). We aim to be flexible with interns’ summer school and work commitments, enabling JOF’s Summer Interns to get the most out of this unique opportunity while maintaining ongoing commitments outside of the program.

Successful applicants to the Summer Intern Program will have completed one year of college education prior to the start of this year’s program. Furthermore, they will demonstrate an active interest in the medical field and a common respect for humanity and ethical conduct.

To apply, follow the links from “JOF’s Summer Intern Program” at www.jacksonortho.org and complete the Summer Intern Program Volunteer Agreement/Application Webform. You can also download the application in printable PDF format and email it to our Internship Coordinator, along with supporting documents, or submit via USPS. (NOTE: .pdf preferred).

Please include the following with your application:
• High school transcripts
• All college grades to date
• One letter of recommendation from a previous employer
• Additional letters of recommendation are optional
• A statement regarding your interest in a career in the medical profession. (Why you are interested in a career in medicine, what type of health care professional you want to be, why you think you are qualified for the internship program).

Competitive applicants will be asked to attend an in-person interview 3-4 weeks before the start of the program. We will do our best to accommodate school and work schedules for our prospective interns.

Cost of the 6-week program is $500, which is payable upon selection as an intern. Ask about scholarships, which may be available based on student need.

Completed applications to 2018 JOF Summer Intern Program must be received by June 1, 2018.
