JOB DESCRIPTION
The National Center for Lesbian Rights seeks a highly-skilled, enthusiastic, diligent, and motivated individual for a part-time legal scribe position to assist an attorney with a disability in our San Francisco office. The legal scribe will work as a member of the legal staff, under close supervision of the attorney.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The legal scribe’s duties will include assisting the attorney with a variety of computer and other related tasks such as:
*Typing, mousing, and handwriting;
*Navigating database and online sources such as Westlaw, HeinOnline, Google or other search engines, and state and federal legislative websites;
*Editing and formatting documents under the attorney’s direction;
*Typing legal memos, case timelines, briefs, motions, letters and other legal documents from dictation;
*Assisting attorney to review electronic case records: navigating through our shared server, opening pdf documents;
*Typing emails;
*Taking notes during meetings as needed;
*Assisting in review of electronic and hardcopy documents (mousing, flipping through pages as needed, etc.);
*Lifting, carrying, filing case files as needed; and
*Copying and scanning of documents as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will have the following experience and qualifications:
*Minimum education: High school or AA degree;
*Very strong computer skills. Candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft Excel. Experience with creating tables of authorities in Microsoft Word strongly preferred; experience with Westlaw a plus;
*Moderate to fast typing speed (80 wpm preferred);
*Strong attention to detail and organizational skills;*Prior experience in an administrative position a plus;

The ideal candidate will be:
*Committed to social justice and enthusiastic about NCLR’s mission and programs;
*Able to commit to 10-20 hours per week in a position that will be open for 12 months;
*Reliable, detail-oriented, well-organized, able to multi-task, and a fast learner;
*Flexible and enjoys working closely with attorney and as a member of a team;
*Willing to work flexible hours and from the attorney’s home in Oakland when necessary but generally work out of the NCLR office in San Francisco; and
*Able to alternate between sitting and standing while working at the desk with attorney.
*Able to interact well with co-workers.
WAGES AND BENEFITS
This position will be $14/hour and 10-20 hours/week (will go up to $15/hour on 7/1/18). This is a part-time, non-exempt position. Benefits include sick leave, vacation, holidays, and transportation and parking pre-tax benefits.
