Departmental Overview

Girls in Engineering (GiE) is a week-long gateway STEM program for middle school girls, designed to give the participants an overview of the tremendous ability engineering has to advance society and affect positive change for the public good. Taught by UC Berkeley faculty, staff and students, the program offers the opportunity for students to work in teams and learn through hands-on activities about many types of engineering—from computer coding to building robots – inspiring them to pursue studies in engineering, math, and science.

Program assistants for the Girls in Engineering program are primarily responsible for camper safety, but also help during modules. This position involves interacting with campers’ guardians, helping campers meet their medical needs and assisting during modules. The Program Assistant keeps track of girls when trips are made out of the camp’s homeroom (to the bathroom, lunch locations, etc.). The candidate will apply UC Berkeley’s Risk Management policy to ensure a safe experience for all campers, help to monitor campers’ behavior and keep camp locations clean and organized.

If the program assistant has experience teaching or participating in outreach programs with children, they may help with the hands-on activities. However, most of the program assistant’s job is more similar to a camp counselor role, not an instructional/teaching role.
