Who We Are
The mission of The Youth Employment Partnership is to improve the employment and education outcomes for Oakland youth and young adults (ages 16-24) impacted by poverty, foster care, the criminal justice system, school underachievement and other barriers to work by providing transformative life coaching, critical skill building, comprehensive education support and work experience. Since 1973, YEP has trained more than 24,000 high school youth and 9,000 young adults ages 18-24. We have become a workforce development and education provider recognized not only locally but also by public systems leaders at the state and national level for our preeminent youth employment programming, and in particular, our ability to support youth and young adults with barriers in their journey to reaching their potential through excellent education and employment outcomes.
In addition to our nationally recognized job readiness training program and vocational training, our organization has an unwavering commitment to secondary and postsecondary education as we recognize the undeniable impact that education has on future earning potential and career options. We provide on-site tutoring for high school credit recovery, GED exam preparation, and basic skill remediation. We currently operate three social enterprises: a small construction business, a café in the Oakland International Airport, and a café in the Juvenile Justice Center. Through these social enterprises, we are able to extend engagement with the young adults in our program and deepen their work experience in the high demand job sectors of construction and customer service.
In-School Work Experience Counselors (WEC) are responsible for the recruitment, engagement and successful completion of their trainees in our workforce training programs. All counselors have direct service responsibilities and are expected to facilitate the training and educational activities of the trainees on their caseload. Work Experience Counselors are responsible for helping trainees overcome barriers to employment, to attain professional competencies through training and to secure ongoing, unsubsidized employment in jobs that provide a living wage. Counselors must be able to build relationships with trainees while modeling healthy boundaries and providing support in a way that encourages professional development.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
• Provide case management to 30 youth (14-19 year old) who face multiple barriers to education and employment and need various referrals to support services.
• In partnership with each youth, develop an Individual Service Strategy (ISS) which includes program, educational, personal and career goals/objectives.
• Recruit youth for program participation from a variety of community partners, public agencies and community outreach while keeping program eligibility and program fit in mind.
• Work on a team of counselors to schedule, facilitate, and teach weekly employability skill workshops and job readiness trainings.
• Monitor attendance, GPA, and credit recovery as it relates to the youth’s educational progress.
• Perform regular worksite visits to ensure young adults are making adequate progress and all worksite issues are resolved promptly.
• Develop and maintain subsidized internship worksite partnerships that provide a variety of work experience options for the young adults.
• Complete and review all program related paperwork including files, case notes and biweekly timesheets.
• Assist with lobby duty, receiving and keeping the culture of our space professional and warm.
• Serve as liaisons and YEP representatives throughout the Oakland community.
• Be available to work during the hours of 3:00pm-7:00pm for at least four days out of the week, Monday-Friday.
• Other duties as assigned.*
WORK EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS: WEC must have extensive and successful backgrounds in employment and job training. All candidates must possess the following: a profound commitment to working with at-risk youth and young adults; a strong ability to organize & problem-solve; ability to multi-task at an extraordinarily high level; ability to thrive in a high energy, demanding work environment; be sensitive to the needs of our client population and maintain clear counselor/client boundaries; a strong, demonstrated work ethic; strong public speaking, verbal and written communication skills; and a serious dedication to working in a non-profit environment in order to better the lives of underserved youth in the Oakland community.
This position is also contingent upon your ability to:
1. Pass a fingerprint and background check (required of all YEP employees).
2. Access to a vehicle at least 20 hours/week, a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.
