Hear Dr. Monique Morris Speak on the “Criminalization of Black Girls” on Dec. 8

Fifteen-year-old Diamond stopped going to school the day she was expelled for lashing out at peers who constantly harassed and teased her for something everyone on the staff had missed: she was being trafficked for sex. After months on the run, she was arrested and sent to a detention center for violating a court order to attend school.

Black girls represent 16 percent of female students but almost half of all girls with a school-related arrest. Monique W. Morris, Social Justice Scholar and author of  Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools and Black Stats, who chronicled the experiences of black girls across the country, will discuss this topic as the final speaker of the Student Success & Equity Speaker Series on Dec. 8, from 12 to 2 p.m.  Don’t miss this important event!
