The Merritt College Men’s Basketball 1st annual all you can eat crab feed was a success!

Over 65 people attended the Men’s Basketball 1st annual crab feed Saturday September 27 from 3-7pm and enjoyed music, a raffle, salad, garlic bread, corn and Coach McMiller’s father locally renowned Gilroy garlic sauce that was saturated in each dungenous crab! The Thunderbird basketball program wants to thank all the people who attended and donated to the event . We will make the crab feed even better next year! After a successful summer going 4-0 in the Southern California NCAA Showcase the 2014-2015 Merritt College Men’s Basketball team is back in school working hard to prepare for a Championship season!

The 2014-2015 Merritt College Thunderbirds will have a new look across the board this season as associate head coach Keenan McMiller has been named the Head Coach of the Men’s Basketball Team. Coach McMiller has assembled a great coaching staff for the upcoming season with legendary Coach Maurice Compton, Coach Jamaal Cannon (Merritt alumnus/ former player) and Coach Jason Gant (UC Berkeley graduate/ former player) coming on board. The Thunderbirds only return 1 player from last year’s 2013-2014 team, Denzel Bellot (Mclymonds Hs 11.0 ppg 46% 3pt line) Denzel will be counted on for big time play every game. The 2014-2015 Thunderbirds have 2 present Thunderbirds, 3 transfers and 10 freshman competing to make the team. Once the dust settles this team will be primed to compete and have a opportunity to win the California State Championship. Stay tuned for updates on the up coming season!

The Thunderbirds lose in overtime in the 2nd round of the California State Playoffs 86-76 to the Santa Rosa Junior College Bear Cubs

The Thunderbirds had a 9 point lead 33-24 at halftime and led most of the game until the final 2:00 minutes of regulation. The Thunderbirds had 7 opportunities to win the game in regulation but were unable to capitalize. Santa Rosa was able to tie the game at 63-63 at the end of regulation. In the overtime period the Thunderbirds were unable to execute and suffered defeat final score 86-76.

The Thunderbirds were led by:

(Sophomore) Anthony Knight 28 points 8 assists and 2 steals

(Freshman) Maceo Bell 14 points and 5 rebounds

(Freshman) Denzel Bellot 13 points and 2 steals

The #13 seeded Merritt College Thunderbirds Prepare to face the Santa Rosa Junior College Bear Cubs in the 2nd Round of the 2014 California State Playoffs

The Thunderbirds will play  Saturday March 1, 2014 at 7pm at Santa Rosa Junior College. Please come up to Santa Rosa Junior College and support your Merritt College Thunderbirds!

The Thunderbirds complete the 2013-2014 Bay Valley Conference Season in 2nd place 17-10 overall 11-5 in conference.

Three Thunderbirds were selected to the Bay Valley All Conference Team

(Sophomore) Guard Anthony Knight 16.4 points per game 5.4 rebounds per game and 3.8 assists per game.

(Sophomore) Guard Jalil Eppenger 11.8 points per game and led the Bay Valley Conference in 3pt shooting 51.4%.

(Sophomore) Forward David Andoh 14.8 points per game and 8.4 rebounds per game.

Thunderbirds Start 2013-14 Season in Thrilling Fashion
After a two-week layoff, the Thunderbirds started their Bay Valley conference season on January 2, going against the College of Alameda Cougars and ending with an exciting 93-90 win in the home stretch.

Congratulations to the Thunderbirds on an Amazing 2012-13 Season!
The men’s basketball team had a storybook run that ended with an 84-75 loss to Mt. San Antonio-Walnut in the semifinals of the state playoffs at Cosumnes River College.

The Thunderbirds (18-13) were seeded in the Northern regional but had playoff wins over American River, defending state champion Fresno City, Ohlone, and San Joaquin Delta to get to the Final Four!
