The Contra Costa County Animal Services Department is currently recruiting motivated individuals interested in becoming part of a team of dedicated workers in the animal shelter, feeding and caring for animals. This is an excellent opportunity to join one of the most outstanding and innovative Animal Services agencies in the State. Typical tasks performed by an Animal Center Technician include maintaining the kennels in a clean and sanitary manner; feeding and caring for impounded animals; assisting the veterinary staff in the treatment of sick or injured animals; and assisting the public in claiming or obtaining animals.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of providing excellent customer service, proper handling of various types of animals, and the ability to adapt to varying tasks and priorities. Sound physical condition, strength and agility are essential to this position.

Minimum Qualifications

License Required: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. Out of State valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License will be accepted during the application process.
Education: Possession of high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or high school proficiency certificate.

Experience: Six (6) months of full-time (or the equivalent of full-time) experience providing customer service in a veterinary hospital, boarding facility or veterinary practice which must have included humane care and handling of animals, and direct public contact providing information regarding entities’ rules, regulations and operational procedures.

Certification: Appointees must successfully complete an initial period of training conducted by a licensed Veterinarian in the proper technique of humane euthanasia within nine (9) months of hire.

Background Requirements: Must be able to successfully pass a thorough background investigation.

Selection Process
1. Application Filing: All applicants must apply on-line at www.cccounty.us/hr and submit the information as indicated on the job announcement by the final filing date.

2. Application Evaluation: Depending on the number of applications received, an Application Evaluation Board may be convened to evaluate and select the best-qualified candidates for invitation to the next phase of the examination.

3. Written Examination: May include multiple-choice questions, writing proficiency test, and scenario based competency/behavioral questions. Test items may consist of the following assessment categories: Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar; Basic Mathematics; Customer Service Skills; Interpreting Forms and Charts; and Animal Knowledge. Candidates must receive a score of at least 70, which may be an adjusted score, in order to move forward in the exam process. (Weighted 50%)

4. Oral Interview: Conducted by a Qualifications Appraisal Board who will evaluate candidates in job-related areas. (Weighted 50%)

The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.

CONVICTION HISTORY
After you receive a conditional job offer, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you have received a conditional job offer. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances. Having a conviction history does not automatically preclude you from a job with Contra Costa County. If you accept a conditional job offer, the Human Resources department will contact you to schedule a fingerprinting appointment.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKER
All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
