Expert Talks About “The Criminalization of Black Girls”

IMG_1857The final presentation in the Student Success & Equity Speaker Series was an important one for the Merritt community to hear. Author and Social Justice Scholar Dr. Monique W. Morris spoke to a wide range of Merritt community members about the policies, stigmas, and cultural illiteracy that limit student potential and push countless black girls out of school and into unhealthy, unstable, and unsafe future. This fascinating and rarely talked about topic brought interesting questions from the audience and eloquent answers from the speaker. Dr. Morris has written a book on the topic called “Pushout,” which will be published in March 2016. Her first book is called “Black Stats.” To find out  more about her, go to www.moniquewmorris.me.
