Anita Black was named Interim Dean of Allied Health and Public Safety (Division III) in August 2017. She was previously Program Coordinator of Merritt’s Cyber Security Program. She served for more than 35 years in the field of education, both private and public educational institutions, in Ilinois and California, before retiring from Merritt College in 2014 where she spent most of her professional career.
As a State of Illinois Teacher Education Scholar at Northern Illinois University, she earned two degrees in Business Education, and while at Laney College, she received an Online Teaching Certificate via UCLA Extension. She also worked in corporate America for IBM as a Marketing Support Representative.
She also taught high school for three years in Aurora, Illinois, was the Cooperative Education Coordinator for Malcolm X College at Chicago City Colleges, and coordinated the Cooperative Retail Management Program at Robert Morris College in Chicago.
She began teaching at Laney College in the Peralta Community College District in 1977. She worked for two non-profit community-based organizations in San Francisco—Greater SF Opportunities Industrialization Center and Bayview Hunter’s Point College. She also worked as an adjunct instructor for Vista College (now Berkeley City College) at its downtown Oakland Business Education Center, and Solano College in Susin City, CA.
