Job Title
Summer Healthcare Intern

Sector
Healthcare

Part Time/Full Time/Other
Intern

Is it a student job?
Yes

Wage/Salary
Cost: $500; scholarships available based on financial need

Education Level
High School

Job Description

The Jackson Orthopedic Foundation (JOF) Summer Intern Program takes place July 8 – August 16, 2019. Application deadline is June 1, 2019.

The 6-week program is designed to provide undergraduate college students with a clinical immersion experience in healthcare. It offers plentiful opportunities to explore career options while shadowing experienced providers as they treat patients. Whether you are interested in becoming a nurse, physician, physician assistant, or a physical or occupational therapist, you will have the opportunity to gain insight into the unique aspects of a variety of professional healthcare roles and inter-specialty collaboration.

Throughout the program, we emphasize musculoskeletal health, focusing on conditions affecting the bones, muscles and joints. Students learn basic anatomy of the musculoskeletal system and present case studies based on their shadowing experiences during weekly conferences with each other in guided, group-learning sessions. We encourage teamwork and professional collaboration among interns.

The program requires that prospective interns be available three days each week (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) throughout the duration of the program. One day per week, most likely Monday, will be devoted to a weekly conference day, and two other days will be devoted to shadowing clinical preceptors in their work environments. We aim to be flexible with interns’ summer school and work commitments so students are able to get the most from this unique opportunity while maintaining ongoing commitments outside the program.

Successful applicants to the JOF Summer Intern Program will have completed one year of college education prior to the start of this year’s program. They should be able to demonstrate an active interest in the medical field and a common respect for humanity through ethical conduct.

To apply, complete JOF’s Summer Intern Program Volunteer Agreement/Application Webform. You can also download the application in printable PDF format and email it to JOF Internship Coordinator, along with supporting documents, or submit via USPS. (NOTE: .pdf preferred)

Please include the following items with your application:
• High school transcripts
• All college grades to date
• One letter of recommendation from a previous employer, advisor or professor. Additional letters of recommendation are optional.
• A personal statement demonstrating your interest in a career in the medical profession, along with a description of why you think you are a good fit for our program.

Competitive applicants will be asked to attend an in-person interview 3-4 weeks before the start of the program. We will do our best to accommodate school and work schedules for our prospective interns.

The cost of participation in this 6-week program is $500, which will be payable upon selection as an intern. Applicants may apply for a program scholarship based on financial need.

Completed applications for the 2019 JOF Summer Intern Program must be received by June 1, 2019.

About JOF: Jackson Orthopedic Foundation (JOF) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with musculoskeletal conditions through education, research and service. Since our founding in 1998, our goal has been to raise the profile and priority of non-surgical musculoskeletal health with local hospitals, schools and the general public, while encouraging a collaborative, multi-disciplinary care model in the orthopedic community.
