Job Description
Friends of Sausal Creek (FOSC) is a volunteer-based, nonprofit, community organization dedicated to promoting awareness, appreciation, and stewardship of Oakland’s Sausal Creek Watershed, which drains to San Francisco Bay. The mission of FOSC is to restore, maintain, and protect the Sausal Creek Watershed. We educate future generations, involve the community in local environmental stewardship, and collaborate with agencies and other nonprofits to have a positive impact on the local ecosystem.
Definition
The education and stewardship intern will support FOSC’s outdoor education and restoration programs. Internship duties will include leading and supporting school groups and community members in habitat restoration and environmental education stewardship projects in urban and wild areas of the Sausal Creek Watershed; assisting with data entry; and doing community outreach, particularly in the Fruitvale neighborhood as part of the Walkable Watershed Program (see www.sausalcreek.org/walkablewatershed). Environmental education field trips involve nature-based lessons, exploration hikes in the watershed, and local stewardship projects. Student groups range from elementary school to college students, and duties may include classroom presentations in addition to outdoor education in urban and wild areas.
Terms and Schedule
This is a temporary position, without benefits. The term of the internship is October 1, 2017, to January 31, 2018, with the possibility of the internship being extended through May 2018. The rate of pay is $12.86/hour. The number of hours required is 12 per week, with a flexible schedule. Candidate must be available to work Saturday 10/21/2017, Sunday 10/22/2017, some weekdays, and 1-2 other Saturdays each month as determined by selected candidate and FOSC staff. The intern will be responsible for his/her own transportation as well as helping to transport tools and other materials to worksites. Workers’ Compensation Insurance is provided. Successful completion of a background check, proof of negative TB results, and proof of personal auto insurance are required. Travel to and from work sites and work-related meetings is not reimbursable.
Desired Knowledge and Skills
• Completion of at least two years of undergraduate education
• Love of the outdoors and curiosity about ecological restoration; knowledge of ecology and plant communities in the Bay Area a plus
• Experience facilitating groups and/or leading outdoor environmental education activities in urban and/or wild areas
• Demonstrated interest in environmental and social justice issues
• Experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds is a plus
• Enjoy speaking and working with members of the public
• Fluency in Spanish is a plus
• Excited to take initiative
The intern should have the ability to:
• Help plan for and lead field trips with school children, including gathering materials; educating participants on the organization, the watershed, the worksite, and tool safety; leading educational activities; and leading restoration or nursery projects during each field trip
• Help plan for, lead, and manage volunteers in restoration and nursery projects
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing; internship relies heavily upon email communication
• Lift up to 30 pounds
• Use word processing, database, and spreadsheet software; Salesforce experience is a plus
