Merritt Instructors To Lead Trips to Tokyo and Ghana in May and July

Tokyo or Ghana will be the destination for Peralta students who want the opportunity to earn transferrable units while learning about the culture and sights of other countries. Business Instructor Simon Chan will lead students to Japan to visit Tokyo as part of his Principles of Retailing (BUS 72, #29362, 3 units) from May 28 to June 4. Activities will include everything from learning about Tokyo’s retail businesses and the latest technology to visiting castles, temples, and other attractions. For more trip details, contact the instructor at (510) 434-3819, ychan@peralta.edu.

In a first-time cross-campus, interdisciplinary effort, Sociology Instructor Charity Clay will participate in taking students to Ghana, West Africa, from July 23 to August 6. While Laney’s Dance Program has been taking its students there for years (DANCE 7), now the trip will also be opened to Merritt’s Sociology class (SOC 2) and College of Alameda’s Communications class (COMM 6). All participants will earn 8 transferrable units for this exciting experience of exploring Ghana’s socio-cultural life cycles integrated with arts and education and service learning. “We know that finding funding for the trip can be difficult, so we are working with various sources to help with scholarships so students won’t miss out on this exciting cultural experience,” says Charity. Space is limited to 10 students per college. For trip details, contact Andrea Lee at Laney, alee@peralta.edu
