A group of Merritt students with disabililties traveled to the California State Capitol in Sacramento on April 29 with Ron Nelson, Disability Services Coordinator/Counselor, for the State Budget Committee Hearing to ask for restoration of the Disability Services funding that was cut by 40 percent. Each student testified individually to the State Senators about the negative effects of the cuts on their Disability Services.
Beginning in fiscal year 2009-10, funding was drastically reduced for programs which provide equal access to education and support student success for students with disabilities at community colleges. The reduction to Disabled Student Programs and Services (DSPS) amounted to almost 40 percent whereas the community college (CC) system as a whole experienced a cut of only about 12 percent. At the same time, the number of students served by DSPS has increased by 3 percent despite a decline of 21 percent in overall community college enrollments.
