First Year Experience (FYE)
What is FYE?
FYE is a two-semester program designed specifically for students in their first year at Merritt College and who intend to transfer to a 4-year institution. FYE offers guaranteed enrollment in two courses each semester (called learning communites) to those who qualify. The program also offers assistance with textbooks, a dedicated counselor, campus support services, and membership in a community of students with similar academic goals. The goal of the program is to provide students the information, tools, and support they need to be successful at Merritt and beyond.
Who is eligible to participate?
Students who have completed no more than 30 units at Merritt College or at any other Peralta college.
How does the registration process work?
1. Complete and submit a Peralta CCD application.
2. Complete the Merritt College orientation and assessment process by contacting the Counseling Department in R109 or call 510-436-2475.
3. Complete the FYE Program application. You can access the application here or obtain one at the Counseling Department.
4. Return a completed application to the Counseling Department and schedule a meeting with the FYE Counselor.
5. Meet with the FYE Counselor to get an overview of the program and enroll in your first semester learning community classes.
What are the FYE courses?
FYE courses include English (at varying levels), Ethnic Studies (in different disciplines and that satisfy the transfer and Associate Degree General Education requirements) and Counseling. Here's a description of the courses scheduled for Spring 2012.
How can I learn more about FYE?
Contact the FYE Counselor, Martina Elliott, in the Counseling Center, R-109C, or at (510) 464-3972 and <melliott@peralta.edu>
