African American Studies
Our philosophy is African-Centered, Pan African and
Nationalist oriented. Thus when taking our courses students
can be assured that each of the faculty in our department
teach from these perspectives and will be sure to introduce
you to new ways of thinking and being. Central to African
American Studies (AAS) is the aim of assisting students
upon a path of consciousness that ultimately leads to
improving their lives, family and liberating our communities.
The primary goals and objectives of AAS are consistent with,
and enhance the overall Merritt College Mission. The AAS
program has consistently sought to "help community
college students develop factual information, tools of
analysis, and favorable attitudes toward the African
American struggle and the liberation of African people
from powerlessness, poverty and racism."
The information and anayltical framework provided by
AAS courses are critical for the nearly 40% African
American campus student population where Black students
are able to gain a strong sense of pride in their identity,
the analytical framework to understand and overcome
multiple oppressions, and access to the mentors and
role-models that AAS instructors usually become. AAS
course work is also crucial for white and other ethnic
students as the central goal is to increase racial tolerance
and understanding of diverse experiences. Re-educating
our minds is the only way to change our behaviors.
